“Ymosodiad Dewr; Amddyffyniad Sicr”

An exhibition of historic and modern chess sets from an important local collection will run from 20 March – 10 June 2008 at Newport Museum and Art Gallery.

Checkmate will feature an amazing display of chess sets collected by Gareth Williams from all around the world, dating from the 17th century through to the 20th century.

The cabinet member for culture and recreation, councillor Ron Jones, said: “The exhibition includes sets from Mozambique, China, India, Egypt, Germany, France, England and Wales, made from bone, ivory, wood and even a wartime paper and cardboard set, some dating from as early as 1650.

“Discover a whole new world by following the history of chess, learning some fascinating facts about the champions, the strategic importance of the chess pieces and how chess is played right on our doorstep in Newport!

“Challenge yourself by playing chess and following the hidden chess trail throughout the museum and much more.”
