The first season of the SWPL is over!

The final match, which would decide whether Cardigan and Cardiff would finish 1st and 3rd, or vice versa, took place at Nidum on Saturday. Cardiff needed only to draw the match to secure first place.

Cardigan got off to a good start when Dafydd Johnston sacrificed a pawn on move 10 in order to exploit his superior development. His development rapidly got more superior, and he crushed Alan Spice in 17 moves. The other games, at this point were looking fairly level

As the match went on Gerry Heap's game, for Cardigan, seemed to be swinging his way just as Michael Herbecke's game, for Cardiff, was going his. At the first time control Gerry had already won his game, and Michael was clearly winning his. In the meantime, Tim Kett's game against Howard Williams had fizzled out with a draw.

All of this left me trying to convert a microscopic advantage, against Iolo Jones, into a win, to save the match, but never with any real chance of success. When I lost a pawn, any winning chances disappeared totally.

White Knights, unfortunately, defaulted their Round 5 match against Monmouth. A combination of 'flu, European footie on the telly, and probably a certain lack of enthusiasm due to White Knights already being guaranteed bottom place. Although Craig Evans announced their default on Sunday, the news hadn't reached all of the Monmouth squad by the Wednesday as Mark Adams and Richard Miles turned up at the Cardiff club looking for the match!

Nidum travelled to Caerphilly on Thursday for their match, but things did not go too smoothly for them. After 2 hours all of the Nidum players were behind on the clock: probably a sign of things to come. By the first time control, John Thornton and Graham Cantello had both won their games and, although Richard Jones won shortly after, Dave Perret was obviously successfully grinding out a win. What was happening on board 1 was always anybody's guess
