THE 49th ‘HENRY GOLDING’ WELSH CHAMPIONSHIP The Championship(Henry Golding) trophy was again restricted to qualified players only(Welsh & performance). The usual opportunities to qualify for non qualified players were offered at the various congresses held throughout the year. This year no additional players qualified. Overall the number of entrants was slightly fewer than last year with 20 in the Championship. Disappointingly a large number of the top players were unavailable to play this year(possibly related as it was a non Olympiad year ?!) which meant that there were only 2 players over 2200, Richard Jones defending champion and Sven Zeidler
Overall a large number of games ended in draws(47%)(some were very short) and the high draw rate certainly increased Richard’s chances to win as they couldn’t compete with his fine attacking style. As his rivals drew with each other, his lead increased, so much so that he had deservedly won the title with a round to spare.
