U1500 Jamboree (Visteon Social Club,Morriston)
West Wales 10-10 East Glamorgan
After winning this three cornered competition for three years running,Gwent dropped out at the last minute, leaving East Glam and West Wales to slug it out for the trophy."Slug" being the operative word,as after 20 hard fought games, the final result was East Glam 10-10 West Wales !
The West Wales team can consider themselves to have done well,as they were outgraded on every board. There were several heart stopping moments, especially for the neutral ( !) controller watching the endgames being played on the bottom boards. The best comeback was by James Silk vs Mike McLoughlin. He overturned a Q vs BN deficit first into a NB vs R advantage, and then created enough threats with a passed pawn to enable him to fork king and rook to win.
Only one player finished the event with 2/2 - Dennis Thomas (West Wales)
A delectable buffet was provided by the Visteon Social Club and paid for by the WCU (You get something for your subscriptions, apart from a grade !)
The players were a joy to control, leaving me with very little to do.
